GULFPORT, MS –IRD, a specialist in disaster response and emergency relief operations, mobilized an emergency response team to Haiti , the day after Tuesday’s 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas. IRD will focus on the provision of emergency commodities, such as water, sanitation kits, medicines, hygiene kits, and shelter materials. IRD has provided substantial emergency support to Haiti in the past.

Lori West, IRD’s Mississippi Gulf Coast Director, commented on the situation. “Just as we did after Katrina, IRD undertook this important humanitarian mission in Haiti to utilize its relief and recovery experience and give back to the people of Haiti the benefits of the experience gained in assisting Mississippi residents recover from Katrina. Arriving the day after the earthquake, IRD is assessing firsthand the enormity of the task ahead.”  She added, “We’re grateful to our recovery partners in Mississippi who have agreed to receive in-kind donations for shipment to Haiti .”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti during this tragic time,” said Dr. Arthur Keys, President and Chief Executive Officer of IRD. “IRD stands ready and equipped to provide assistance to those affected by this devastating disaster.” Tuesday’s earthquake was the worst to hit Haiti in more than 200 years. An estimated 3 million people have been affected, and the loss of life is expected to be high.
